Manual or automatic transmission? Which is best? Print E-mail

Cars with manual transmissions are usually, but not always, a little less expensive than automatics. They typically have a little better EPA gas mileage rating. Performance is usually some better.

Manual transmissions are less complex and fail less often, although both manuals and automatics are generally very reliable. And cars with manual transmissions are considered to be more sporty and more fun to drive.

Automatic transmissions require less attention while driving, which can be a real advantage in rush hour stop-and-go traffic. Automatics are better for learning drivers, although it's wise to learn to drive with both types.

Automatics are generally more expensive to repair, although failures are not common. Some automatics on some newer model cars are a kind of mix of fully automatic and part manual, providing many of the benefits of both. Look for paddle shifters on the steering wheel or dash.

Learning to drive is easier with automatics but all drivers should know how to drives with manual transmission in case it becomes necessary in the future, say, in event of some emergency.
